therapeutic approach

I utilize a solution-focused and strengths based model when working with clients and am always influenced by my training in Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing and anti-oppressive practice. During our sessions I follow the client’s lead, providing support along the way.

The ultimate goal of our sessions is to give you a safe place to feel heard, and to work towards your emotional, physical and wellness goals. I strive to provide clients with an empathetic and supportive space to share their story, explore strengths and problem solve.

work Experience

Since 2011 I have worked as a Registered Social Worker in both inpatient and outpatient hospital settings providing counselling and support to patients and their families struggling with acute and chronic illness.

My patients would often suffer from both physical and mental health issues and required emotional support through individual, family or crisis counselling. We worked together to establish trust, coping mechanisms, navigate resources and problem solve.

In 2019 I transitioned my focus to primarily private therapy. As a result of the pandemic this has resulted in a balance between in person and online sessions.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

In 2011, I obtained a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from The University of Toronto. Eight months of that degree was spent training in the assessment, psycho-education and treatment of eating disorders at Toronto General Hospital. There was a strong emphasis on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy and Motivational Interviewing interventions. I also completed a practicum at Toronto Grace Hospital where I strengthened my assessment and counselling skills.

In 2008, I graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honours degree in Sociology, minoring in Family Relations and Human Development. While completing my degree I spent two years providing crisis counselling to women fleeing abusive relationships at a local women’s shelter.

Shortly thereafter as a counsellor at KW Counselling Services in Kitchener, Ontario, I learned to use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches to support children struggling with anger management and emotion regulation difficulties.

I am currently working towards certification as an Intuitive Eating Counsellor. In 2022 I completed trainings in Internal Family Systems model for Eating Disorders, CBT for Panic Disorder, Motivational Interviewing approaches and treating co-existing anxiety and depression.

In the past year I began to notice an increase in clients expressing concerns about ADHD symptoms in themselves, their children and their partners. As a result of this, my most recent education has been focused on certifications in ADHD treatment.

FREE INTIAL CONSULTATION

The therapeutic alliance, or the bond between client and counsellor, is of significant importance to me and deeply impacts the effectiveness of our sessions. For this reason, I offer a free 20 minute initial consultation for us to learn more about how we might work together.

If you begin to feel that we are not the right fit, there is never any obligation to progress to the next session. Should this occur, I am happy to refer you to another counsellor who may be a better fit.
